How Commercial Audio Video Distribution Impacts Client Behavior

Have you ever gone to a concert and ended up sitting right next to a speaker blasting loud music?

Or arrived late to the movie and the only seats left were the ones up against the wall?

You probably left with a bad memory and a splitting headache. It’s not something you want to do to clients and customers in your Mooresville, SC business.

Your commercial audio video distribution system can affect how people behave in your store. It can keep them there to spend more money, or it can quickly drive them away.

If you want more of the former and less of the latter, this is the blog for you. Keep reading to find out more.

Does Music Really Influence Behavior?

The type of music you play in your business can impact what your customers think of your establishment, according an article by the Association for Psychological Science

In an experiment conducted at Curtin University, 120 Scottish students were given menus featuring world cuisine. They were then assigned to rooms playing different culture’s music.

The article goes on to say:

“Sure enough, a room’s atmospheric music not only affected what menu item participants ordered, but also which words participants remembered. People were more likely to select menu items that corresponded to the music they heard. For example, those who listened to the Beach Boys were more likely to order typically American fare such as hamburgers and hotdogs.”

Essentially, the study proves that the type of music you play in your business has a huge effect on what people think and feel. But it doesn’t say anything about the conditions of the music itself.

The genre, tempo and, especially, the volume can impact how your customers act. That means you don’t want to turn them off with a poorly distributed AV system.

How to Build the Perfect Music Environment

If you’re running a heavy metal club, you want your music to be as loud as possible. But if you’re trying to run a coffee shop, you probably don’t want to rupture any eardrums.

As Motive Metrics tells us, a field experiment conducted way back in 1966 proved “that music loudness had a direct effect on the amount of time spent in stores.”

The researchers, Smith and Curnow, found that the louder the music, the less time customers spent in the business.

If that’s the case, you’ll need a system that can play loudly enough to entice customers, offer the selection you’re looking for and create an inviting atmosphere.

The first thing you’ll need to do is evenly distribute your speakers and calibrate them to the room’s conditions. That way you’ll avoid any hot spots with too-loud music.

Then you’ll need a control system that allows you to choose the music you want. Many streaming services offer just that kind of accessibility.

Finally, you’ll want to make sure connecting your devices is easy enough that each of your employees can do it without taking up too much time.

Once you have all that, you’re on the way to positively influencing clients.
