In an experiment conducted at Curtin University, 120 Scottish students were given menus featuring world cuisine. They were then assigned to rooms playing different culture’s music.

The article goes on to say:

“Sure enough, a room’s atmospheric music not only affected what menu item participants ordered, but also which words participants remembered. People were more likely to select menu items that corresponded to the music they heard. For example, those who listened to the Beach Boys were more likely to order typically American fare such as hamburgers and hotdogs.”

Essentially, the study proves that the type of music you play in your business has a huge effect on what people think and feel. But it doesn’t say anything about the conditions of the music itself. 

The genre, tempo and, especially, the volume can impact how your customers act. That means you don’t want to turn them off with a poorly distributed AV system.

How to Build the Perfect Music Environment

The researchers, Smith and Curnow, found that the louder the music, the less time customers spent in the business. 

If that’s the case, you’ll need a system that can play loudly enough to entice customers, offer the selection you’re looking for and create an inviting atmosphere.

The first thing you’ll need to do is evenly distribute your speakers and calibrate them to the room’s conditions. That way you’ll avoid any hot spots with too-loud music.

Finally, you’ll want to make sure connecting your devices is easy enough that each of your employees can do it without taking up too much time.
